Switched Reluctance Motor Drives

A switched reluctance motor (SRM) is a type of electric motor that operates by reluctance torque. The physical structure of the magnetic circuit is a simple doubly-salient electromagnetic arrangement where stator poles carry spool-type windings, and the rotor does not incorporate any electrical coils/cage or permanent magnets. The power converter operates with unipolar phase currents and the control system regulates trque by controlling the current amplitude by chopping at low speed and the positioning of the phase current with respect to rotor position at higher speeds.

System Design

Hardware Electronics

Drive electronics has been developed and built for a wide variety of SR motors ranging from several hundred watts, up to 1 MW. Recent projects have included an ultra-high-speed motor drive operating up to 150,000 rpm and a low-speed, high-torque 2,500 Nm machine & drive.
Embedded Software & Control Simulation

Control electronics and software has been developed using a wide variety of 8, 16 & 32-bit microcontrollers, DSPs and FPGAs. Firing angle control using various incremental & resolver positon sensors has been developed to operate over a wide range of speeds. More advanced sensorless control algorithms have also been developed with the aid of Matlab/Simulink and proven in the field.
